FLMS Students Celebrate “Actions for Peace” Day
Gifted and Talented students from Fountain Lake Middle School participated in “Actions for Peace” Day on September 1 at Hot Springs Junior Academy. Students played a game about cultural differences and learned how understanding those differences can reduce conflict. The students also designed coffee sleeves for Coffee Records in Malvern and Starbucks in Hot Springs. The businesses donated the sleeves and will use the students’ creations during Arkansas Peace Week starting September 17. The designs included messages of peace and ways to create a better world based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students also created their entries for either the Arkansas Peace Week art or essay contests. Sixty-eight students from Fountain Lake, Hot Springs, and Malvern participated in the event.
From the Arkansas Peace Week site: “Arkansas Peace Week is a program of activities with a mission to educate and promote peacemaking in our society and raise awareness of organizations working to build a lasting peace in Arkansas. It is conducted by a coalition of local, national and international organizations, faith groups and individuals, with a mission to promote peace and justice. Arkansas Peace Week is planned in coordination with the nationwide Campaign Non-Violence Week of Actions. It celebrates non-violence as a means to instill justice, build stronger communities, alleviate poverty, promote ecological stewardship, end war, and eliminate the scourge of violence in our society; while seeking respect, inclusion and fair treatment of all people. The lessons learned and relationships formed during Arkansas Peace Week create a foundation for sustainable peace in our society throughout the year.” *www.arkansaspeaceweek.com
